Not in MY House!

TiVo will NOT be coming to live in my house. No way.

Somehow, in all the research I'd done, I managed to miss the fact that you must "subscribe" to their service to use the damn thing.

And, you don't even get DVD capability with it. So, what's the point? I'd rather go through 40 cheap VCRs and tapes than deal with a machine that costs a minimum of $200 and requires a fucking subscription to use.

No way, Jose. No way, Hose B.

It ain't gonna happen here.

What I am going to do is buy myself an inexpensive DVD player.

Okay. Enough of that. I need to go curl up with my buddy and get warm. Sitting around topless, blogging, too early in the a.m. - when I could be snuggled in close to someone fabulous - what the hell am I thinking?

That's exactly what's kept me from getting TiVo. You mean I have to pay all this money for the box, then pay you monthly, too?? No way.

What's the difference between that and say, cable or satellite? TiVO can record programs, whereas you have to be sitting in front of the box when a program comes on the cable. You calso must buy a VCR plus the satellite to tape movies.

Not that I condone paying a monthly service to TiVO, but one advantage is being able to redord 2 shows at once or being able to record more shows than a VCR tape can hold.

Actually, if you can build a computer that supports TV in, there's a program out there called freevo that does the same thing, but it's free. You just need to provide the computer. Too geeky for most, though.

Oh, if we had the extra coin, we'd subscribe to TiVO. It is so cool. We seem to be mentally impaired in this household when it comes to having the VCR set up for our favorite shows. Plus, when shows are preempted due to various stuff, we miss the endings. TiVO would do all that for us. And TiVO, ever the faithful friend, would see that we like movies starring, say, Danny Glover, and would just go right ahead and record them for us. *Sigh*

Coin.

Wow I didn't know you had to pay, oh well maybe when we win the lottery then we can get one. LOL

I do that with my entertainment PC. I have a remote for it too. It basically just took a TV tuner card (ATI All-In-Wonder) and a big hard drive. You have to have an Internet connection to get the TV guide to work, but it's just like the TIVO and I had most of the parts already. The TV card cost me $150 plus the cost of a Y spiter for the cable.

You don't *have* to subscribe, I think - but might wanna look at the ReplayTV instead, I know they don't have a 'subscription' - and just as good, if not better than TiVO... If I had the money, I'd buy that instead of a TiVo...

For one thing, cable and satellite companies give you the equipment for free, or for about $2 a month, instead of having to spend a couple hundred bucks for it. For another, if you have TiVo, you still have to pay for cable or satellite service unless you just want your local channels.

Give me a VCR in the bedroom and in the living room, with my digital cable's On Demand service. That keeps me perfectly happy.

Replay TV is just like Tivo except without the bad stuff.
Although it is more expensive. You can either pay for the unit and an extra 200$ lifetime subscription up front, or you can pay monthly. They're probably going to take that option away soon so get on it if you want it. They also have the commercial skip feature, and they're being sued by big entertainment (usually a good sign.)

and you can email shows to anyone else who has one.
